Gecco "Hopefully" releasing more Silent Hill merchandise this year

2/16/2017

Way back in April 2015 Gecco announced they were working on two more Silent Hill statues but since then very little information has appeared about them.

The most recent update came from Whitney of Silent Hill Historical Society in December. She reached out to Gecco to see if there was any news to share with regards to the statues but unfortunately was told that they're still working on them and will post any news to their Facebook page.

As it was only two months ago that we had an update I decided to contact Gecco myself but instead of asking for an update I was curious to see if Gecco had any plans to release any additional merchandise this year. As Gecco have released a bunch of T Shirts and iPhone cases in the past I wanted to see if we can expect more additional items to come.

Gecco responded to my email to let me know that there was no update on the statues (Which I expected) but they;

"Hopefully will release other items this year, and they are more like accessories".

So expect even more awesome releases possibly this year from Gecco!

The World's Biggest Silent Hill Fan! An Interview with World Record Holder Whitney Chavis

2/10/2016

Silent Hill was released in 1999 and has since gone on to spawn a whole series of games, 2 films, comics and a whole heap of other merchandise. I'm sure some of you will have some (if not all) of the games as well as a soundtrack or two? Maybe some comics or a poster on your wall? But how many of you can say they have original movie props, signed merchandise, your name in not one but two of the games and a World Record Holder title?

For Whitney Chavis Silent Hill is so much more than just a game. Chavis has been collecting since the game was released and really got into around 2004, her first big collectable was the James and Nurse statue from Silent Hill 2 and since then she has been unstoppable. Her collection has grown so much over the years that she now holds the title for 'World Biggest Silent Hill Collection', with no end in sight to her ever growing collection (and love for Silent Hill) I interviewed her to find out more about what attracted her to the game, her most loved items and everything in between.

Apart from the games what was the first piece of merchandise you can remember collecting?

If I discount the soundtracks and guides as well my first collectible would be my Studio Oxmox Silent Hill 2 James and Nurse Statue. Finding this statue made me realize that that there was a variety of merchandise for the series available outside of the games, guides and soundtracks. This purchase is what inspired me to look for more and start a collection.

What would you say is the most precious item in your collection and why?

Ah man that’s a really hard choice for me to make! I’m really fond of the Silent Hill 2006 and Revelation movie props as well as my Heather with the custom base but I guess if had to pick just one item it would have to be my Japanese Silent Hill Retail Banner. I love the design and it was one of the first stand-out items I added to my collection... plus it's one of the few items that consistently comes to mind whenever I'm asked to name a favorite over the years...so I'll go with that!

Obviously you’re a huge fan of Silent Hill but what is it about Silent Hill that got you hooked?

I got into the series way back when the first game was released in 1999. My interest was piqued when I read a short preview of the game accompanied by a screenshot of Harry standing over a dead dog in a bloodied alley in one of my brother’s random game magazines. I was really into playing survival horror titles and since Silent Hill was referred to as a "Resident Evil clone" at the time it was a give in I would at least give the game a try.

Once I actually played Silent Hill it became obvious to me that outside of play mechanics and being in the horror genre Silent Hill and Resident Evil were completely different experiences.  After beating the game once I had so many questions left over that I knew replaying and getting all the endings was a must! Once I was done, the game’s unique music, atmosphere and stunning CGI still stuck with me months later and since then has been one of my most treasured and favored games. So I was hooked from day one pretty much and my passion for the series continued to build with each new installment!

You’re also a huge fan of Deadly Premonition and collect merchandise for that too. Do you collect things for anything else?

Ah... Deadly Premonition now there’s a game seriously lacking in some sweet, sweet official merchandise! (and to think I believed collecting for Silent Hill was hard all those  years ago HAH!)

I’m not actively collecting for anything else at the moment but I always end up with collections of varying sizes for media I really like. For example, I’m a big Superman fan so I have a bunch of stuff - movies, comics, figures, etc for him. I also have a weakness for dolls and action figures from my favorite shows, games and movies so I have a quite a collection in that regard ranging from imported anime dolls from the 90’s, high end Hot Toys action figures, to collector Barbies and Funko Pops...though Silent Hill is definitely my largest and most active collection by far.

You run a hugely popular website and Facebook page for Silent Hill as well as an additional site and page for just your collection. Did you ever imagine them to be as big as they are? and what made you decide to set those up?

No way! I started silenthillcollection.com as a way to help me keep track of what I have but also as a resource for others to see just what kind of cool stuff there is for Silent Hill out there. When I published my first two collection videos on youtube years ago there were comments from people wishing to see more shots of an item or wanting to know where I purchased it so it seemed like making a website with more information to reference was just the next logical step. I knew there were people really into collecting for the series so I created the FB collector group as a fun way to share finds and make trades with others. Honestly, I’m amazed at how many people have joined over the years. I had no idea there were so many fellow SH collectors out there!

My “main” Silent Hill site, Silent Hill Historical Society, actually began as a site dedicated just to Shattered Memories formerly called “Always on my Mind” back in August 2009. The original 1999 game has always been my favorite installment so I was super excited about the re-imagining when it was announced in April that year.  With the game’s original October release date fast approaching I was surprised that there wasn’t already a site dedicated to the game already. Sure all the websites dedicated to the entire Silent Hill series had some of the big news and screens but there was nothing like the fan run silenthillorigins.com or silenthill5.net which, in anticipation of Silent Hill Origins’ and Silent Hill Homecoming’s releases, were a central hub for the latest news, game information and screens. I figured since I was already scouring the web for any new information anyway why don’t I compile it all and take a stab at making my own fan site?

Then when Downpour was announced at e3 2010 I decided to expand the site to include Downpour news since I had so much fun gathering news on Shattered Memories. So I changed the name to "Silent Hill Historical Society", made a new layout,  started a FB page and a general Silent Hill podcast and things just took off exponentially from there.

I never really expected SHHS become anything more than a small space for me to gush about my excitement over dumb upcoming Silent Hill things so for it to be considered one of the ‘big” SH sites out there is pretty fucking amazing...especially when there’s frankly better and more complete Silent Hill resource sites out there. It’s been a blast sharing all the excitement (and the disappointments) these past 6 years I’m truly grateful to everyone who has paid it a visit.

...I just wish we all still had a new installment to look forward to :(

You’ve conducted quite a number of interviews, podcasts and reviews over the years. Out of all of these which one stands out the most for you and why?

Definitely my podcast interview with Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington and director Michael J. Bassett. It was pretty surreal to get an (skype) interview with actual movie stars and a director! I was super nervous and was rather worried my questions would be lame given that I hadn’t seen the movie yet. Given that I live in California and they were all in New York for Comic Con when the actual interview happened 6:30am my time so recording a podcast that early was certainly a first. I was really worried I would sound groggy lol. Luckily I didn’t sound too bad plus they were all super nice even if I rambled a bit!

Being a World Record Holder is impressive and an amazing achievement. Did you set a goal towards this or was it more of a ‘I’ll apply and see what happens’ kind of thing?

It was more of a what that hell let’s try and apply kind of thing.

My friends would often state that I probably had the largest Silent Hill collection in the world. I didn't really think that was possible given how many other fans I know, yourself included, who are also passionate about collecting items for the series but thought it would be fun to see if such a record was ever attempted. I knew there were other series specific collections on record in the past like Pikabellachu's famous Pokemon/Pikachu collection world record in 2009 so I knew it could be possible. The big question was would mine, which was only in the hundreds and not thousands, even be considered worthy?

So I checked out the Guinness World Record website and looked to see what sort of collections they had on record and I saw that a few records actually had hundreds of items like Rob Hull's collection of Daleks (571) record set in 2011 and thought hey maybe my collection may actually have a chance.

I applied on the Guinness site for a "Largest Silent Hill Collection" category in January (shortly after I put my December 2013 collection video on youtube) and a week later I received a response saying they couldn't accept my proposed category and told me to try for the "Largest collection of videogame memorabilia" instead...which I knew I couldn't come close to given it was over 8 thousand items!

I figured that I would try again when my collection was closer to a thousand but to my surprise months later a representative from Guinness emailed and said they were interested in adding a new category for "Silent Hill only" and wanted to review my claim again. Not sure what changed their mind but shortly thereafter I was declared a world record holder!

It was a pretty exciting experience! I know there's bigger and more interesting world records out there but it's amazing Guinness thought my collection was worthy to record!
Your collection is constantly growing, where do you store it all?

Luckily for me most of my collection is made up of small items so I can fit 90% of it in plastic bins in my closet. When I get a bigger place with a spare room I would love to display everything but at the moment the only time everything is out is strictly limited to when I want to make a video or take pictures showing my entire collection.

Over the years you’ve managed to add so many amazing additions to your collection but surely you’ve also missed out on a few as well?

Oh yes loads of times!

So.
Many.
Times.

One big missed item is the Silent Hill Cold Heart pitch document that resides in your kick ass collection!

Shortly after scans of the document appeared online on Silent Hill Memories back in December 2014 the original owner reached out to me via facebook to see if I was interested in purchasing it. Well back then Facebook neglected to alert you if you have messages from people you aren’t friends with in your “other” folder so I didn’t see the offer for 4 days. By the time I saw the message and got back to the seller he had already sold it to you. It kills me how close I was to owning that document but hey at least it went to a friend’s awesome collection in the end :)

The Silent Hill Collectors group on Facebook is hugely popular and it’s seen so many new collectors showing off their collections, Can you offer any advice for anyone who wants to start their own?

To find rare and unique Silent Hill items be sure to check auction sites often! Most of my own collection was acquired through Ebay. Another great place to look is Yahoo Japan Auctions, it can be pricey since you’ll have to go through a third party like Rinkya.com which involves fees upon fees but it’s a great way to find many rare Japanese items!

Also try and talk with other Silent Hill collectors and see if any are interested in trading or selling items as well. It’s one of reasons the collector group is around afterall! I’ve made a lot of great acquisitions for my own collection by just asking! It never hurts to try :)

Most importantly: have fun collecting! It doesn’t matter if you only have the games, it is still a worthy collection to share.  No matter how big someone else’s may be now just know it didn’t grow that way overnight... we all started with a single item afterall. :D

Out of everything in your collection, what was the hardest thing to get hold of?

Definitely the retailer incentive edition of Silent Hill: Dead/Alive #1. This particular comic has cover artwork by Loïc Zimmermann and is the rarest single issue of any of the Silent Hill comics printed to date.

According to Chris Ryall Chief Creative Officer and Editor-in-Chief of IDW Publishing this particular series didn't have huge orders so not many of these covers were shipped.

I found how rare it was myself trying to track one down for my collection after I contacted over 100 comic shops across the world with no luck. Most of the shops either didn't order enough to receive an incentive cover from IDW and those that did only managed to score one and sold it years before my search started.  I really thought I would never find this particular issue but some friends of mine somehow found a copy and surprised me with it. I was so thrilled to check it off my want list!

And finally a few questions just for fun:

Who is your favourite Silent Hill character and why?

Heather. She’s a sassy badass.

Favourite Silent Hill game?

All about the original baby as it is the one that hooked me from day one! (BTW Silent Hill 2 is my next favourite followed by Downpour!)

And finally describe Silent Hill in 140 characters or less.

Your vacation destination for lost family, bizarre cults, & facing your inner demons w/ a 100% chance of fog and a 98% chance of death.

An interview with Donna Burke, the voice of Angela Orosco and Claudia WOlf.

Donna Burke is an Australian singer, voice actress and highly successful business woman. Currently living in Tokyo, Burke not only runs a successful sound production company and talent agency but also has a number of albums under her belt. Not to mention a long list of voice work that is more than highly impressive.

She has worked on games such as Shenmue, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy and Silent Hill. I wanted to find out a bit more about Burke and her time working on Silent Hill as well as future projects and more.

As Angela Orosco is my all time favorite Silent Hill character, this really was an honor to be able to speak to the voice behind her.

Check out the interview below:

You originate from Perth, Australia but currently live in Tokyo. Did you manage to find your feet well due to the cultural difference or did you settle right in?

When I came it was just for 2 years and I didn’t think I would be here for long. After 3 years I realized I didn’t want to leave so started studying Japanese but I was never very good at it :(
I love living in Tokyo as it is a vibrant, safe and interesting contrast to my home town of Perth, Western Australia.

What do you love most about Japan?

The food, the seasons, skiing, mountains, the culture of politeness, the food!

You’ve managed to work with some big names so far, including voice work on Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy and more! What would you say was the most enjoyable to work with and why?

I really loved working on Silent Hill 2 and 3 as it was an acting job that stretched me.. I enjoyed working with a new company from Taiwan called Rayark on a song for their new game Implosion..but I have to say working with Akihiro Honda, Ludvig Forsell and without doubt Hideo Kojima and his team including Sean Eyestone (who also directed me for some voice acting on MGSV)
Akirhiro Honda was always cheerful and upbeat - I love non moody people especially at work! Hideo Kojima is also cheerful, full of good humour and yet exact in what he wants. It’s so nice to have a pleasant working atmosphere- whether it’s in a bank, mechanic shop or studio doing voice acting or singing. The people make the work more enjoyable. I could shovel shit all day if my co workers were good people.

Within Silent Hill you voiced Angela Orosco and Claudia Wolf. Out of the two which one appealed to you the most?

Definitely Claudia- she was amazing!

As we all know Angela has had a rather tragic past, did you find it difficult at all voicing such a sad character?

Yes, because I didn’t actually know her past when I was acting- it was all hinted at- I never had the whole story spelled out- it was all done scene by scene

Overall how long did it take to record both Angela and Claudia? Was the recordings set over a period of time or was it recorded all in one go?

This was pre- google calendar but the motion capture took about 5 days each and 1 day of recording the voices
I’m especially proud of my zombie voices in SH3!

Would you like to return to Silent Hill again in the future if the opportunity arose? If so what kind of character would you love to work with?

Yes and honestly anything- I’ve done a young American girl, manic British psycho villain, now I’m doing a robot voice for Metal Gear Solid V.. I’m sure next up is ..a middle aged man, with small feet..er who has a stutter and is from Fiji??!! Bring it on!

Silent Hill aside, you have released a number of albums, do you have plans for any future releases?

I do.. I plan to release some tracks this year followed by an album.

You and your husband Bill set up your very own Talent Agency called Dagmusic, How did this come about? And what has been the most rewarding thing about Dagmusic so far?

There are many things that are rewarding about running a company- it’s very challenging even if it’s a small, boutique agency like mine. Number one is seeing my staff grow and mature. Second is being able to create products like music for games-not just provide talent. Recently Dagmusic did the voice casting and I wrote the lyrics and sang the theme song for Implosion which comes out in April.

It’s fantastic to be part of the production of something. I’m proud that the vocals for Sins of the Father wore recorded at Capital Records in LA and also at Dagmusic!

And finally you’ve had a hugely impressive career which can only get better and better, out of everything so far that you have achieved what would you say you are the most proud of?

Sins of the Father is a truly epic song. I remember in 2010 Akihiro told me after I had sung Heavens Divide at an event for Konami that Hideo Kojima wanted me to sing the next song and it would be even better.  We started doing demos in October 2012, then in May 2013 I flew to LA to record the vocals for the E3 trailer and it still is yet to be released which is very exciting knowing how much the fans and also people who don’t even know the game will love it.
I’m working on some exciting things now that the fans will LOVE but..alas, I can’t mention them yet!

What we learned from Silent Hill: Cold Heart

2/16/2015

Picture
Silent Hill Cold Heart is the original idea behind Shattered Memories and was revealed by Climax Studios via their Facebook page. The reveal was through a giveaway to win an original Pitch Document for Cold Heart. Luckily I managed to get my hands on an original Pitch Document and have broken it down to show what Cold Heart is all about and why I wish this game had been made.

Cold Heart follows the story of Jessica Chambers, an athletic college student, plagued by nightmares and an emotional vulnerability that has lead her to become dependent on her psychiatrist. She is slowly being eaten up by something deep inside her and needs to escape. She decides to go out of state and visit her parents but along the way she becomes trapped in a freak snow storm and ends up tailing an ambulance to hopefully a safe location. Sadly she is very wrong and soon realize's when she arrives in Silent Hill. The world around her has been conjured up from Jessica's cold, icy heart.

Key Features

Picture
Controls:
The player is able to control a flashlight via the sensor in the Wii remote. The flashlight can be upgraded to UV, Polarized and Infra red. These different flashlights allow the player to harm enemies, solve puzzles and melt the ice. You can also perform Melee attacks using the Wii remote. Improvised weapons which degrade and break can be picked up and ripped from the players environment.
The Wii remote also allows the player to move and twist objects to solve puzzles and unlock rooms, locks and more. The remote is also used to nod and shake your head when interacting with characters in the game, along with pointing to objects and individuals.

Environment:
Weather changes as you progress through the game from slow light snow to heavy snow drifts. These weather patterns affect the players health and speed. The player is able to track their body temperature via a 'Temperature pill' found in the back of an abandoned ambulance.

Profiling:
Shattered Memories incorporated psychological profiling throughout the entirety of the game and is used in the exact same way it was originally presented in Cold Heart. The players actions change the environment, appearance of characters, amount of monsters and more. As with Shattered Memories, you are also given questions to answers and activities in flash back style therapy sessions with Dr Fairchild. The answers from the player are all added to their psychological profile which affects the game play and their final result.

Health:
As mentioned above, the weather can affect the players health which can lead to death. To help with energy and temperature levels, you are able to upgrade clothing to increase temperature. Food and drink (Candy bars, chips and canned food) are found in various locations of the town, these help with the players body heat, health and stamina. A 'hydration backpack' would also be available to sustain the player against the elements.

Inventory:
The player is only able to hold what they can carry. This would be visible on the player or stored in pockets. If Jessica is carrying too much, the player would need to decide to throw out an item or ignore what is available entirely. This makes it harder for the player to hold onto much needed weapons and health related items.

Location:
Cold Heart's location resides mainly in the west of Toluca Lake. A new take on the town as well as unseen locations would all be present throughout the game.

Puzzles:
To make it easier for the player to return to previous locations, you are able to annotate the map. This allows the player to plan routes and pin point puzzle locations for future reference. Puzzles within the game rely on audio cues from the Wii remote. These include listening to chamber clicks when picking locks.
A metal detector can also be used to find items hidden in the snow.  The torch is used to melt snow and ice which reveal hidden messages and objects. The UV torch also allows the player to uncover hidden schematics and reconnect wires to connect power.
One puzzle method I find rather unusual is that the player is able to go sewer fishing. This allows the player to fish in the sewers to find much needed items.

Story/Gameplay

Picture
Starting on the intersection between Nathan Ave and Bryant St, Jessica heads towards Toluca lake. On route she passes through a park. Nearby she can see a group of figures around a merry-go-round. They're all motionless and frozen. As she shines the flashlight over them they begin to twitch and move, turning into monsters.

This part of the game changes on how the player reacts to the monsters and from their psychological profile. You can either run or try and fight, these actions affect the weather and monster appearance.

Jessica begins to run from them, using the flashlight to slow them down, along with knocking over bins for them to stumble and climb over. After the chase Jessica appears on the lake front but it's not over yet. As she runs over to the jetty more monsters begin to appear. One of them launches at her, knocking her into the lake. She appears seconds later, panicked and freezing. In the distance a showboat can be seen as the lake begins to freeze over. The boat becomes frozen and still. The ice now trapping her head above the water and a flashback begins...

Picture
A therapy session begins with Dr Fairchild and begins with questions about fears of tight spaces. The following questions are asked, the player must answer with a yes or no answer (minus the last question):

“Are you scared of tight spaces?”

“Have you ever dreamt of being buried alive?”

“Any dreams about drowning?”

“Would you rather die by drowning or by being buried alive?”

Following this Dr Fairchild holds up flash cards, one of drowning, one of being buried alive. The player then has to “Point to which you fear the most."
Next the player has to choose from a series of abstract images as to what best looks like a monkey, an eye and a snake. The therapy scene ends with Fairchild asking:

“You scared of snakes?” “They’re really nothing to be scared of, they don’t attack unless provoked, you know? Well most of them at least…”

We return to Jessica in the lake, she's quickly loosing consciousness in the water. A figure approaches in the distance, monsters appear to be close by but they appear to fear/obey the stranger. As they get closer Jessica's recognizes him, she saw this man in a bar earlier.
"I know you" she says. He replies with "I know you" and smiles.
She shouts for help and notices he doesn't seem to show any urgency in helping her. He replies to her call for help with "Better the devil you know..." and then stamps on the ice breaking it around her. The screen turns black.

The mans behavior is driven by data gathered so far in the game. His appearance and dialogue alters dependent on the player.

We return to Jessica lying on the ice next to a hole she has just been taken out of. She is cold, her temperature dropping fast. If she doesn't get inside soon, she will die. She heads over to the frozen showboat and climbs aboard, taking a chocolate bar out of her backpack to restore energy as soon as she's inside. On the boat her temperature begins to return to normal. Using the Wii remote, the player is able to take a pipe from the wall to use as a weapon. The goal here is to reach the engine room. The player needs to use the flashlight to investigate corners and hidden details throughout the boat. On the way to the engine room you're attack by two monsters which once again you can fight or run from.

As soon as the monsters are out of the way Jessica's phone begins to ring, it's the man who helped her out of the ice.
“If you ever get off the lake come see me at the Boathouse. I’ll be there, i'm meeting my Mother” there's silence then a baby begins to cry “Not NOW, Quiet!” he says angrily. The call ends.

Picture
The engine room is dark and empty, lower parts of the room are frozen over, it's as if a leak has occurred. At the bottom of the ice a key with a tag is visible.  At the end of the boiler room is the boats boiler engine. A nearby note lets the player know what they need to get the boiler working. At this point the player needs to find dry, splintered wood to burn. Once lit the boiler warms the room causing the ice to melt. You grab the key which reads 'Captain Quarters'. The key appears on screen and can be turned using the Wii remote, this allows the player to fully examine it.

Making your way to the Captains Quarters you're attacked by monsters once again. As before the player can run or fight.

When you enter the Captains Quarters a cut scene begins. Inside Jessica finds a girl weeping in the corner. She ask's what's wrong but is ignored. The girl jumps up and stabs Jessica in the chest with an icy knife that she concealed in her dress and then runs out of the room. Jessica looses consciousness and another therapy session begins.

Picture
This therapy session begins with Dr Fairchild Showing abstract pictures once again. “A fish” Jessica says. “It looks like a fish.” “Yes it does doesn't it.”
Dr Fairchild mentions about how last time she was talking about her father and she should continue.

“Would you say you were closer to your father than your mother?”

“Were you an only child”

“But you feel you were your parents favourite child?”

The player once again has to answer yes or no.

“Ah ok, now then, please take a look at these four drawings. Pick the one that most looks like the sort of thing you used to draw as a child.”

In this example the player points to a sketch of clouds and a girl with a  dog. “Nice choice” he chuckles. “Now let’s get creative. Here’s some pencils and an eraser.  Jessica, can you draw me your idea of the perfect home… take as long as you want.”
The player can now sketch on screen and switch color pencils and use the eraser.

“Fantastic, is there no end to your talents?” and the the therapy session ends.

We return back to Jessica in Silent Hill. Jessica wakes up and checks her chest, there is no sign of a wound at all. She looks out the window and notices the lake is no longer frozen and the boat is heading towards the shore.  The boat shudders as it docks and Jessica makes her way outside…

So there you have it, the full Cold Heart pitch document broken down in full. What do you think? Like the idea of Cold Heart? or are you much happier with Shattered Memories?

Although Shattered Memories does contain a lot of the original ideas, I would have loved to have seen another female protagonist but i'm happy with how Shattered Memories turned out in the end. You can view fully scanned images of the pitch document right HERE

Silent Hill: Alchemilla now available for download

Silent Hill: Alchemilla is a fan made game created using the Half Life 2 mod. The game features no monsters, guns or melee but instead invites the player to take their own notes, create their own maps and solve the puzzles throughout the game.

Alchemilla has been created to return the player to Silent Hill and has included the dark and eerie atmosphere of the games along with eerie music that we have all come to love.

You'll need to complete the various puzzles throughout the game using "mathematical, logical or even psychological knowledge" and hope you can make it through Silent Hill alone.

Paradise Interviews: An Interview with the Mastermind Behind Silent Hill Requiem, Gareth Morgan

Over the years we've seen quite a number of fan films for Silent Hill but nothing has been anything like Silent Hill Requiem. Currently in production this fan film is created by Gareth Morgan who also happens to have written, directed and even stars in the film itself. If you're sitting there thinking "What is Silent Hill Requiem?" well fear not as Paradise grabbed an interview with the man himself. Check it out below:

What is Silent Hill Requiem?

Silent Hill Requiem is a feature film that was made possible via an Indiegogo crowd funding pitch. The pitch raised $5k, the highest budget I have ever had to work with. The plot to Silent Hill Requiem is that in the year 2015 the Otherworld has broke free of its boundaries and is now infecting the entire world. So an unknown force has brought back those that have faced Silent Hill before to try and stop it.

What made you want to work on a Silent Hill film?

I have always wanted to work on a Silent Hill story ever since playing the first game, back then I was mainly writing and acting, so I designed a concept but I didn't have the means to take it any further.

Throughout my career I have worked in a variety of different art mediums until finally becoming the film maker I am now. During that time I have always been heavily influenced by the metaphysical, the darker and stranger the better. So my plays, dance pieces, art works and writings are always reflective of that aesthetic. Thus when I began working in film my stories where generally horror or science fiction with dark, strange plots and characters.

My most successful film prior to Requiem was a short film called EPiSODE which took heavy influences from Deadly Premonition, Twin Peaks and Silent Hill. This film premiered at the Raindance Film Festival, did far better than I anticipated and solidified the style I could use for a Silent Hill film.

I had joined a Silent Hill group on Facebook when I was designing EPiSODE as I wanted to get other peoples interpretations on what made Silent Hill tense and scary. One morning I'm on that group page, Silent Hill Heaven, and see a post about Silent Hill 'Lost Days' a short film that was crowd funding its budget and at that point had raised near enough its goal. I had no plans to crowd fund my idea, I had tried crowd funding twice in the past for two other projects and both times it had failed to generate anything. But seeing that project gave me the push to move forward with my own. So I took a very small section of my original idea and turned that into a 2 minute micro film project.

It took me a few days to adapt a script and then storyboard it and with my friend Del (Olwen who plays Heather in the final film wasn't available at the time) we filmed the short in an evening. After filming I took one of the shots that didn't require any backgrounds to be made and played around with it until I set upon the colour palette I liked, Del saw it moments later and said she loved the look, so I went back to Silent Hill Heaven and posted the still to get some feedback. Within an hour that still had gone viral like nothing I had ever done before. Suggestions then came to me to develop the short version into a pitching tool for a crowd funder. So after a few hours of thought and releasing some new stills from the short, that went viral the instant they hit the net, I figured why the hell not. I had always planned Requiem as a feature and to do so I'd need a budget, also if the crowd funder failed I wouldn't lose anything as the short version would still exist.

How did the idea of Requiem come about?

A lot of people asked me 'why don't you make the film of SH1/2/3/4?' and I simply replied, because why do they need to be made? Those games are already movies in their own right, they are highly cinematic games and tell the story they want to tell beautifully. Besides we have seen what happens when those games get adapted into major motion pictures; they have to go for mass appeal i.e. profit, and thus lose what made the original storylines great to begin with, Silent Hill is certainly not for everyone.

As a story teller what interests me is what comes next; after the ordeal of being encapsulated in that town you don't just skip off into the sun. Also what does the town do once it has judged its prey? Feet up, cup of Joe, see you bright and early Monday morning?

These questions drove me to create the plot of Requiem; what would happen if the Town decided to judge the World? How would the survivors react to being forcibly returned to the place of their greatest torment? Who are they now because of this Town, and how would they interact with each other?

For me to get to these conclusions meant I had to take specific endings of the games as Requiems cannon and then use their back stories to develop their futures. The way I decided on this was simple, whatever ending I got when I first played SH1-4 was the cannon I would use for the story, those endings where SH1 - Good Ending, SH2 - Leave Ending, SH3 - Normal Ending, SH4 - Eileen's Death.

I have also used information from the other Silent Hill games, minus Shattered Memories since that is a retelling, in fleshing out the plot to Requiem. I also worked with a consultant who is very much into her theories and concepts of Silent Hill, AJ from The Fourth Floor, so I have done my upmost to make sure everything that happens in Requiem has grounding in the original ideas and concepts of Silent Hill 1-4, without going off on some unfounded tangent because that will make a wider appealing story. To be honest with you, screw the wider appeal, I'm a fan of what Silent Hill is and I have no illusions that I could make it better, or that I am trying to show how a Silent Hill film should be made. This is, and the more I say this the more corny it sounds, but this is a fan film made by a fan for the fans. Not every fan mind you, because I can't please everyone and have no intention too. I'm just telling a tale of how I think the story continues, nothing more, nothing less. (gets off soap box)

Although already heavily into production, what has or will be your hardest challenge making this film?

Making any piece of art is a challenge. As I have already banged on about, what I aimed to do was to make a Silent Hill film that felt like a part of Silent Hill. I am not arrogant enough to rewrite the story or change things to better fit with a 'vision'. That's why I chose to continue the characters stories rather than retell them. So my biggest challenge was and is to make this feel like part of the franchise.

Will there be any surprises that fans can look forward to?

Plenty. The film is littered with Easter Eggs for those savvy to see them (though that might require repeat viewings hint, hint). There are more Silent Hill characters in the film than I have announced, this includes what monsters will be in the film. But to keep these details as surprises I'm not telling you who or what they are, so stop asking =P

How can the fans get involved?

I have recently re-opened four of the donation perks; this was due to a large influx of people wanting to donate towards the project even with the indiegogo being finished.

One of those perks is to have your image featured somewhere within the finished film, so that's one way to get involved.

The other is the usual, spread the word. I try to keep a constant flow of info about Requiem on my various social media pages, FB, Twitter, Tumblr, so the more viral that stuff goes the better.

I am also selling signed prints of the various posters I have created for the film, all sales of those feed directly into post production of Requiem and pre-production of Lazarus, so, you know, check the store ;)

What can we expect from Zenithfilms in the future? Will this be it for Silent Hill or can we expect more?

Expect more. There was a lot of ideas that I had to cut out of Requiem to keep it to a general length for my first feature film, last thing you want to make for your first feature is a 4 hr Peter Jackson epic. But rather than just trash these ideas I kept a hold of them.

Then one day it came to my attention that Silent Hill Shattered Memories was originally suppose to be a game called Cold Heart, not many people knew this at the time (it's pretty common knowledge now as the Pitch Document for Cold Heart is on the net for all to see) and all that was available to me was the concept art work for the box cover and a tiny paragraph of info that just contained the protagonists name and a few gameplay elements (even from that it was apparent to me that this game would have been more interesting than Silent Benny Hill Shattered Memories, but that's just my opinion o_0)
It was seeing this cover art of Jessica trudging through the snow carrying a bloodied pipe that gave me the inspiration those other ideas I cut from Requiem needed, and thus Silent Hill Lazarus was born.

I don't want to go into any real details of Lazarus as that may end up containing spoilers to Requiem, but suffice to say Silent Hill Lazarus will be a web series, set 16 years after Silent Hill Requiem. The over arcing plot follows Jessica, a British psychology student, who has been brought to Silent Hill under false pretences and soon discovers she has a dark and twisted connection to the town.

Can you reveal any exclusive info for the fans?

You keep sneaking these question in don't you? lol. I'd love to, but I don't want to spoil any details of the plot I haven't already released. So no ;)

You’re working really hard on this film and from what we’ve seen so far it’s looking amazing, any idea on when it might be finished?

I'm going to have to say the same thing I say whenever anyone asks me this questions, (and trust me I get asked this a lot), it will be out when it is ready.

I’m not trying to sound like a dick when I say that either, it is an honest answer. I can give no exact release date because the editing process is incredibly time consuming.

Consider that a Hollywood movie can take between One and half to Two years before completion, and those productions have teams of people working around the clock on different aspects. This film is all me, I have no post production team, all the editing, CGi, background assets, sound engineering, it’s all down to me and I only started the pre-production of this film in Feb of 2014.

To try and paint a picture, I'll break down Requiem for you.

I got the budget in February 2014 and began writing the script.

The final draft of the script was finished in April and me and Olwen (Heather) did a read through to make sure it flowed well and made sense.

I then began drawing the storyboards, this took me everyday of 3 months to complete, we're talking turning an 80 page script into a 160 odd page storyboard, each page consisting of 8 panels of shots, and I don't just draw stickmen in a box, I draw highly detailed comic book strips. Because we are essentially filming in a green box, most of the time there is little to no set, so having detailed storyboards means me and my actors know exactly what is occurring in each shot, the spatial awareness of the scene and what else is in that shot for them to take notice of.

We filmed end of July into August, collectively the shoot took just over 2 weeks of 10 - 14 hour days.

I am spending roughly 8-10 hrs a day editing, 6 days a week (I have to have at least one day off to keep a clear head) and some days I can get through a variety of different shots and other days I will be there for 10 hrs straight just working on one.

I really do appreciate that people are hyped and cannot wait for the film, which is super awesome and keeps me going, but patience's is a virtue. I am doing my best =)

Finally a few questions just for fun.

Who is your favourite Character out of all of Silent Hill and why?

Heather Cheryl Mason. I have always been drawn to strong female protagonists. Mainly because we rarely see them, in any form of media. I have felt this way for a very long time, well according to my dad anyway, the story goes:

When I was very young, about 6, I was watching a typical horror film with my dad, (my dad didn't really care for age ratings) it was the usual fair of pretty girls being slaughtered by some evil thing and apparently I asked my dad 'why was it that just the girls die, why don't they fight back? I know Mum would!'

That question stayed with me and near enough every piece of narrative I have wrote has a female lead character  who doesn't play the typical trope of the victim, they of course get into difficult situations but never rely on a male character to save the day. Just look at the films I have on my youtube channel, I think 90% of them are female leads.

So of course when SH3 came out I was instantly drawn to it because of the lead character.

I also find it a shame that no other Silent Hill game since has had a female lead, not that developers haven't tried *cough* Cold Heart *cough*

Favourite Silent Hill game?

Silent Hill 2. I know, could I be any more predictable?

But it isn't my favourite because of James or his anti hero styled story. It is because out of the many games that exist, it is one of two where the main antagonist is the Town itself.

Not the typical cult or a person trying to claim the 'power' trope, just simply the Town, playing Judge, Jury and Executioner, and not just for James, but for everyone.

And describe Silent Hill in 140 characters or less.

True Survival Horror

View Silent Hill: Cold Heart pitch document in full

Revealed by Climax Studios through a giveaway on their Facebook page, Cold Heart was the original pitch idea behind Silent Hill Shattered Memories.

Unlike the final game, Cold Heart followed a new female protagonist called Jessica Chambers. When Jessica decides to take a trip to visit her parents she becomes trapped in a huge snow storm and ends up following an ambulance to hopefully a safe location. What she doesn't realize until it's too late is that instead of a safe location she ends up in Silent Hill.

Cold Heart would have still contained psychological profiling throughout the game which could be shared with friends throughout the game. One big difference though is combat. Unlike Shattered Memories, Cold Heart featured "As Real as it gets' Melee" which involved improvised weapons.

Overall the original idea seems rather interesting and i'm somewhat disheartened that it was never made into the final product.

You can see full scans of the Pitch Document below.

Would you have liked to of seen Cold Heart as a game?

Paradise Interviews: An interview with writer and director of Silent Hill Prelude, Edward DeBoy

Silent Hill Prelude is a fan film that takes place before the original Silent Hill film. Currently in production, Prelude is already gathering steam across the internet and is quickly becoming a highly talked about production. The film has already garnered the interest of some familiar names and luckily for you guys Paradise managed to grab an interview with the writer and director of the film Edward DeBoy. Check it out below and let me know what you think in the comments below:

What is Prelude?

- Prelude is a charity fan film that takes place just before the first Silent Hill game. The events in the film are from a collection of notes and mentions throughout the game that where never fully told. Prelude is meant to enrich your Silent Hill experience not only for long time fans but for people who want to get into the series for the first time.

What made you want to work on a Silent Hill film?

- Some would say I have had an unhealthy obsession with the series ever since it came out in 1999 but only when Silent Hill 2 came out that I truly grasped the series. It's complex storytelling was much easier to understand as the games went on but the first game always stuck with me and I had to beat it multiple times just to understand what just happened. When I would play the games I always played them as if I was watching a movie.

How did the idea of Prelude come about? Did you have additional ideas for a Silent Hill film or was it always going to be a prequel?

- At first Prelude was going to be Silent Hill 1, but after looking at what the budget would have been, it wasn't going to happen. So I thought about how many times that story has been told. I wanted something new within the original games timeline and I remember having all these questions about the first game. So I started making notes and doing homework on the event's that happened before the game and that kind of turned into Prelude.

It’s awesome that you’re making this for charity too, was this always the plan?

- In a way, yes. I have a long history with the franchise and it's helped me through some tough times in my life and I knew I wanted to be able to give back or "pay it forward" if you will.

What would you say is going to be the hardest challenge you expect to come across when making this film?

- The biggest challenge so far is raising the money to produce Prelude and the time we get to make it. Everything honestly comes down to money, sadly. If we don't raise the full ammount it will take a lot longer to produce and will not look as good as we would like but still doable.

Will there be any surprises that fans can look forward to?

- Haha! Absolutely! The poster alone is riddled with clues about the opening sequence. There are lots of nods and cameos from other games but don't fret, everything still fits within the original Silent Hill timeline.

How can the fans get involved?

- The fans can help by donating on our Indiegogo page or simply spread the word around about the film. One of our perks is just $5 and your name will be in the credits knowing that YOU made this film possible not only for Silent Hill fans but for charity as well.

Will you be selling any merchandise for the film?

- Yes! We are in the works for adding a merchandise page on our website where you can get Posters, Shirts and who knows what else we can get our hands on. We will also be doing some giveaways for the fans during our live events on Twitch.tv.

Kim Coat’s is interested in the film, how did that happen?

- Kim is interested but as I said before, it all comes down to money. We have a bunch of big Hollywood actors we have been reaching out too and the number one problem is money. These guys are union and need to get paid and can not work on projects unless they are insured. I approached Kim during a convention as I was trying to spread the word around Prelude. I pitched the idea of him returning to play Gucci and that his story would follow the games. He was excited and gave me his agents number saying he would be interested.

- As for Bryan Cranston, it's the same kind of thing. We would love for him to play Jim Bennett (Cybil's Dad) when we redo the intro to the film. But like I said, it all comes down to funding.

Although Prelude is at the early stages right now, do you have any plans for any other Silent Hill projects in the future?

- It all depends on how well Prelude does. I see Prelude as part 1 in a Silent Hill trilogy. It would go Prelude, Silent Hill and then Silent Hill 3. So if I ever get the chance, I'd love to do a complete movie trilogy but I'm happy with Prelude just being a stand alone movie like what Ubisoft did with Assassin's Creed Lineage. We really hope to become an "Official" fan film with Prelude.

Finally a few questions just for fun.
Who is your favorite Character out of all of Silent Hill and why?

- Tough question. I'd have to say Harry Mason. His love for his wife and Cheryl are so strong that he will risks anything for them.

Favorite Silent Hill game?

-Yeah, I'm going to have to be cliche and say Silent Hill 2. It was the one that really dragged me into the series

And describe Silent Hill in 140 characters or less.

- Silent Hill is a town that shows you who you truly are and exposes the truth.

Christmas is once again upon us and if you're like me you quite possibly have no idea what you would like Santa to bring you this year. Good job Paradise is here to help!

I have come up with another  Christmas Gift Guide to ensure that awesome Silent Hill fan in your life gets exactly what they want and to make it a little bit easier I have included links directly to the gifts in question. So its as simple as click, checkout, chill!

I have selected a large number of links from around the world so there is something for everyone no matter where you are!
Luckily we have been treated to a lot of Silent Hill merchandise lately and to start off lets look at some awesome apparel.

Insert Coin Clothing have three different Silent Hill T-shirts available. The  Silent Hill Historical Society T shirt  Lakeview Hotel T shirt and the Radio Repairs T shirt. All T-shirts are available in sizes Small to 3 X Extra Large and are priced at £22 each or 3 for 2. If you're after something more than a T-shirt why not check out the awesome James Sunderland Jacket they also have available? Priced at £60 it's similar to the original release jacket from 2001 that was limited to 250 pieces and is a must for any fan. You can also grab the full range in a bundle for £85.

Or why not check out the Lakeside Amusement Park T-shirt or the Halo of the Sun T shirt available from Game Legends, this T-shirt is available in sizes Small to Extra Large and are both priced at €18.98. You can also save 10% at Game Legends with the code: SHPGLMC (you're welcome).

For the fans who like to sport some awesome headgear, why not give them a Silent Hill Military Hat featuring the one and only Pyramid head or the brilliant Robbie the Rabbit cap. And if that's not enough a matching Lakeside Amusement Park cap (to go with the T-shirt) is also available.

The perfect stocking filler would also be the Lakeside Amusement Park and Welcome to Silent Hill wristband, along with the Halo of the Sun keychain also available from Game Legends.

Picture
If none of the above are making you want to spend your cash then maybe a Robbie plush will change your mind? There is nothing like a blood stained Rabbit to show its Christmas! And this year Gaya Entertainment released quite possibly one of the most amazing Silent Hill items ever! The Robbie the Rabbit plush is available from Game Legends, Amazon and various other stores. He stands at 37cm tall and is so darn cute! This one is pretty much a WIN all in its self.

If you're wanting to spend a bit more on your presents this year for that REALLY special Silent Hill fan, you could always grab them a Silent Hill Gecco figure.

The first being the Red Pyramid Thing figure with a Lying Figure or the Bubble Head Nurse figure. Both of these figures are more available than the Red Bubble Head nurse or the Red Pyramid Thing figure with a Mannequin in his hands. These latter figures were available at San Diego Comic Con and are limited to 1500 pieces, so will be a bit more pricey. Do not fear though as you can still get them from Amazon, Ebay or any other sites that just happen to still have them in stock.

The more recent Gecco releases include Heather, Pink Bloody Robbie, Blue Bloody Robbie and A bloodless limited edition Robbie. The Bloodless version is exclusive to Japan and is limited to 300 pieces however you may be able to grab one if you use the auction sites Rinkya or Jauce.

If you're like me, you might really enjoy hand made gifts. There is something about a gift that has either been made by someone close to you or just someone that really adds something extra! So for those of you who love to give a more personal gift why not check out the custom Robbie the Rabbit Tree decoration or Toluca Mall Keychain. Both items are made by Amy who runs Silent Hill Alchemilla Hospital so you know it's been made by a fan for the fans!

Another beautifully made item is the 'A Tale of Birds Without a Voice' Silent Hill inspired Art book. It features a total of 16 illustrations showcasing characters and locations in SIlent Hill. The book is created by Elisa Fortes, who I know is a HUGE Silent Hill fan so you're really getting an awesome piece of Silent Hill memorabilia. The great thing about this book is that you can purchase it in a Hardback copy or a Digital copy.

Picture
As it gets closer to Christmas you'll be wanting to get all of those presents done and dusted as quickly as possible and what is quicker than a Dvd/Blu Ray or Game? Why not grab Silent Hill Revelation  on Dvd, Blu-Ray and 3D Blu-Ray? You can purchase Silent Hill Revelation from a large number of Stores including Amazon, Ebay, Hmv and more. The Uk Steel Pack of the Original Silent Hill film was also released this year and as it's limited edition, this is one item that should surely bring a smile to any Silent Hill fan.

As you should know by now at Gamescon this year we were treated to a free playable teaser download of P.T which revealed the forthcoming next Silent Hill game 'Silent Hills'. Well remember that creepy fetus in the sink? Why not own your very own? A 3D printed P.T Fetus is available via shapeways!

The currently in production fan film, Silent Hill Requiem from Zenithfilms also has an online store where you can grab your very own official Requiem T shirts and signed prints! Check out the store right HERE

We were also treated to more Downpour this year with the awesome Comic Book Series 'Silent Hill Downpour: Anne's story. This series of comics follows the story of Anne Marie Cunningham and extends upon what we played through in the Downpour game. Issues 1-3 are currently available now with the 4th and final issue being available December 10th.

If you'd rather keep the person you're giving a gift to keep them quiet for a while so you can enjoy your own presents, go for a Silent Hill Game.
Finally for those who don't have the time to get a gift or don't quite have enough funds, why not give the gift of a pre-order? A Red Pyramid Thing figure from Figma will be available April worldwide. A new pose-able Robbie the Rabbit figure will also be available in July from Medicom Toy. You could always pre-order one and then pay once available, that way the person you intend to give it to will receive an amazing gift without paying a penny.
