'Have you seen a little girl?'

It’s easy to forget this now, but Silent Hill was one of the first horror games that sought to truly mess with your head, rather than just provide jump in your seat scares. Not that they didn’t show, either. I will always regret replaying this with the windows open, as I jumped and screamed ‘AAARGH GET AWAY FROM ME AARGH’ every time a monster showed its horrible face. The neighbours are probably not best pleased with me.

This is probably the only games where the limitations of the system added to the atmosphere of the game, rather than detracting from it. The draw distance disguising fog meant that you would wander around the deserted town, minding your own business, when off in the fog somewhere you’d hear some horrible cry. It’s probably a monster wanting to eat your face off, Harry! RUN! And if you can’t run, I guess you’d better fight! Good luck getting that heavy iron bar over your head! It’s the eternal question, did the combat suck because of bad design, or did it suck because Harry was just a normal dude, and therefore WOULD suck at combat?

Speaking of our hero Harry, is it just me or does he only repeat the same three or four lines throughout the whole game? If he’s not asking ‘What’s going on?’ or ‘what is this?’, he’s asking after his daughter Cheryl. She wandered off into the fog and now he has to ask everyone, ‘Have you seen a little girl? Short black hair? Seven years old?’ Bloody hell, put up some posters and save your voice mate.

Even though the game suffers from that horrible affliction that made all voice acting in all games of that era atrocious, there’s still a surprising depth of characterisation for everyone involved. The example that comes to mind is Lisa Garland. She seems innocent enough, and tries to help Harry when she can, but it turns out she was a drug addict, complicit in keeping Alessa Gillespie alive after she was burnt horribly. Her death scene is especially striking:
(Oh, don’t go yelling ‘SPOILERS!’ It’s a 14 year old game at this point).
Having a nose around the internet, I saw this article point out that Silent Hill brings Western and Eastern horror together in one story, and by jove they were right. Small American town full of unknowable evil, plus the paranormal element of a tortured young girl seeking revenge, equals OH GOD WHAT’S BEHIND THAT DOOR I’M TOO SCARED TO LOOK.

It’s all understated terror, but it’s done to perfection. It’s things like the disembodied crying in the school toilets, the unexplained bodies hanging in the ‘otherworld’, or the entire disjointed feel of the ‘nowhere’ section that really get under your skin and set you on edge. I didn’t seek to plonk an easy villain in front of you, a la the zombie of Resident Evil, and be on its way. It made you question everyone and everything that happened to you as you played.

If you haven’t played it yet (and really, you haven’t by this point? Really?), then I highly, highly suggest you seek out a copy and see how horror games should be done.

Geccos' Toymunkey Bubble Head Nurse review #SilentHill

The Gecco Bubble Head Nurse statue is a real thing of beauty. Taken directly from Silent Hill 2 the nurse stands at 9.8 inches high and is 1/6 scale. Beautifully painted with such detail, this is definitely one for the fans.

The packaging for the nurse statue is a collectors piece all in itself. Coloured with deep reds, the box features an image of the nurse designed by Masahiro Ito. The front uses the famous 9 square save image from Silent Hill 2 as a window to see inside the box. The statue itself is light weight and easy to piece together.

Inside the box contains the Nurse, a stand, two pairs of hands, an imitation steel pipe and 3 black clips. These clips are so you can attach more than one Nurse figure to the base to create an additional scene. The statue comes with two pairs so you can have her hold the steel pipe in either the left or right hand dependant on personal choice. I have chosen to go with the steel pipe in her left hand.

The packaging also contains a full list of all the people/companies involved in the production and release of the figure. It also has two small profile sections with a brief description about Shin Tanabe, the Sculptor and Yoshinori Yatake, who is the painter. Along with these profiles the box also contains information about Silent Hill and the Bubble Head Nurse.

The base she stands on has a small protruding stud that her foot attaches to. As with the nurse even the base is detailed. Bloody footprints, a cracked floor and even a small section that looks like a metal grate.

The Nurse statue itself is highly detailed. Starting from her feet upwards you can see small specks of blood on her shoes to coincide with the bloody footprints on the floor. Her legs are pale and covered in small veins. Her dress is creased and dirty, torn in places with small blood specks here and there. She also has on a small name badge but her name is unfortunately not visible (I call her Cynthia). Her body leans to the one side to replicate her movements in the game.

Her detachable hands are painted to look like they have gloves over them. They have even been given a glossy, shiny look as if they are in fact made from rubber. The steel pipe she brandishes in her hands also looks like real metal.
As with the original Bubble Head Nurse we see in Silent Hill 2 the skin on her face overlaps. Her chest, like her legs is also covered in veins. What appear to be small cracks in the skin on her face replace where the mouth should be. The detail that has gone into the tones and colours of the flesh make it look all the more real. Even her small hat has creases and lines that give off a realistic look.

This figure also comes with a small card that is attached to the inside of the box opening. It contains a small amount of information on one side with you own figure number. The Nurse I received is Number: 00024. The other side of the card has the same image we see on the back of the box.
In comparison to previously released Silent Hill figures this really is something else! The work that has gone into making such an amazing piece of merchandise is astounding and I am extremely pleased with what I have received. Prices for this statue vary, however I managed to purchase mine from Bigbadtoystore.com for $104

You can also purchase the Bubble Head Nurse from Game-Legends.com for € 149.98.

This is definitely one for the fans and a real must!

#SilentHill Custom Lying Figure And Mannequin Monster

9/22/2013

I decided to make a custom Lying Figure and Mannequin Monstter.
Using polymer clay I shaped and moulded both figures. The main part of the body is created by using tin foil, screwed up and shaped. It is then covered with the clay and once each figure was complete, placed into the oven to harden.

I then used acrylic paints the add the detail and colour. As a finishing touch I used PVA glue in the chest of the Lying Figure and on the Legs of the mannequin monster to add a shiny, varnish like look!

The awesome fan page: Silent Hill: Promises has created a teaser trailer!
Promises follows the story of Rose and Christopher from the previous films. Although only a fan project I would personally love to see the film turn out this way!
