Silent Hill: Downpour is the story of inmate Murphy Pendleton, an inmate at Ryall State Prison who was locked up for stealing a police cruiser. The beginning of the story states in prison with Murphy beating to death another inmate for a reason unknown.
He is later transferred via prison bus to another facility but as the bus drives just outside of Silent Hill the road appears to have dropped out of no where forcing driver to perform a quick, heavy turn. This ultimatly causes the bus to overturn and roll directly down a hill.
When Murphy wakes he makes a run for it in the hopes of freedom he walks directly into the town of Silent Hill and is welcomed by a whole bunch of new creatures.
As he travels deeper into Silent Hill it would appear that the reason why he is there is because of another. Another person he has known for quite some time.
Downpour introduces new areas of Silent Hill. This time the game focuses more on the East part of the town. A popular tourist spot called 'The Devils Pit' is introduced along with other locations and new creatures!
The eighth game is also the first game to introduce Silent Hill into the 3D gaming world. Both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 released the game with the option of 3D game play. The player requires a 3D capable television to view the game in this format.
Downpour also focuses heavily on a water theme and moves away from the falling ash that has been present in previous games. The foggy atmosphere is still present also. The reason as to why Murphy's version of Silent Hill is very water based becomes evident through flashbacks of Murphy's past.

DOLL/shadowDolls are mannequin like creatures that have a ghost like shadow. The shadow, which is a replica of the mannequin moves quickly and attacks in heavy blows. The only way to destroy the shadow is to destroy the doll.
screamerFirst mistaken for a woman being attacked by another inmate Murphy saves a Screamer only to find its far from human. The screamers use ear piercing screams to disable their victims and attack with heavy blows. They can also attack by jumping on their victims.
bogeymanThe bogeyman appears several times throughout Downpour. Although at first he does not appear to be a direct threat to Murphy he does cause harm to others when Murphy is present. Later on in the game Murphy finally comes face to face with the Bogeyman. He does take a large amount of damage and can give a large amount of damage too with his large Hammer. The bogeyman man shares similarities with The Butcher and Pyramid Head.
The Most underrated, but one of the best games because of the deep story line, the town itself with it's side quests and Easter Eggs and last but not least I just love the characters like Murphy, Cunningham and Sewell. - Valentin Steinerberger |
weeping batWeeping bats are tall creatures with long arms. Their faces are deformed and they attack by jumping down from the ceiling and striking their victims. Due to their size they can catch up with a victim fast. They can also attack in groups.
voidThe Void does not have a true form. Instead it is more of a portal. When it appears it opens and absorbs anything in its path. The Void chases Murphy several times throughout the game. When it 'attacks' it sucks in everything in its path, including Murphy's skin. If close enough to Murphy it will cause damage and slow down Murphy and everything around him. If Murphy is not fast enough it will kill him completely. Another Creature called the Tormented Soul also appears when the Void does. It does not directly harm Murphy but will slow him down by getting in his way when the Void is present. The Tormented Soul is a creature that has been stretch apart and suspended in a cage.
prisoner minionPrisoner minions are powerful creatures that attack by kicking and punching their victims. They can also disorientate their victims by slapping both ears at the same time. A similar creature is the Prisoner Juggernaut. The Juggernaut is more powerful in a number of ways. First off its attacks are stronger and it can also attack by charging into its victims. Secondly it can also take a lot of damage which makes these best to avoid.

Monocle Man:
The Monocle man is not a direct threat to Murphy and does not cause any damage. He only appears once in the entire game and only speaks one line. He appears to be a large, stretched piece of skin with a face and monocle. His only appearance is when Murphy is on the cavern ride.
Wall Corpse:
They appear to be the corpse of a human. In bedded into spikes on the wall, they spit out dangerous gas which is harmful to their victims. They are easy to avoid however by simply timing their attack and running past at the correct time.
Wheelman:
The Wheelman is the final Boss that Murphy must defeat to escape Silent Hill. Throughout the game the Wheelman does make appearances but in its final form its much larger then previously seen. It can be defeated by removing its four life support machines. It also attacks with its mind, its hands and by releasing other creatures upon Murphy.

Downpour fact:
Did you know in the original Silent Hill: Downpour trailer we see Murphy fighting the Monocle Man? In the released version of the game we only see this character once during the mine cart part of the game. However in a very early trailer we see Murphy in a boss like scene with the Monocle man. Check the video on the left of this: (about the last 5 seconds) The reason why this boss was cut from the game is unknown. |
Although spoilers have tried to be kept to a minimum to avoid ruining the game for those who are yet to play. This section contains full ending spoilers. If you are yet to complete the game, avoid this section now!
Silent Hill: Downpour has a total of 6 endings. Five of those being available the first time you play the game.
The endings are:
Forgiveness:
Murphy forgives Anne and a flashback shows that Murphy refused to kill her father. Instead he is framed. When the flashback ends Murphy and Anne both leave. Anne allows Murphy to escape and radios over to inform other officers that Murphy died in the crash.
Truth and Justice:
Although very similar to the Forgiveness ending, this time after Anne lets Murphy leaves we see Anne back at the prison. She walks into the office of the person who framed Murphy for her fathers death. In her hand, behind her back is a gun.
Execution:
Murphy kills Anne and doesn't forgive her for trying to kill him. He then wakes up back in his prison cell with the Wheelman watching him through the bars. He soon realises he is trapped like the others, in Silent Hill.
Reversal:
This ending is a re-play of the beginning but this time Anne is the prisoner and takes Murphy's place.
Surprise!:
The Surprise ending is a comical ending in which Murphy breaks out of prison by digging his way out. When he digs his way to the top of the ground he is greeted by a dimly lit room. The lights come on and the shout of "Surprise" is heard. Within the room are several main characters and creatures from previous games. Pyramid head cuts the cake (and the table) in two.
