Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is a re-imagining of the original Silent Hill game. Sticking with the original plot Harry Mason is once again looking for his missing daughter Cheryl Mason.
The game opens through the eyes of a patient. Dr Michael Kaufmann once again returns to the Silent Hill series and sits with the patient. Elsewhere Harry Mason has just crashed his car on an icy road and is now on the hunt for his missing daughter. Throughout the game it switches between Harry Mason's story and through the eyes of the patient with Dr Kaufmann.
Occasionally Kaufmann will ask the patient to complete simple tests, colouring in a house, putting words into certain categories etc.
In Shattered Memories the main feature is ice. Unlike other Silent Hill games the fog element is no longer present. Also real combat occurs. Harry does not have any weapons and doe's not fight with the creatures of Silent Hill. Instead he must run to safety. When the town is transformed it is covered in ice and the creatures of the town appear. They run towards Harry and if close enough will grab and hold him down.
As Harry Mason travels through town he also reveals more of his own and Cheryl's past via his mobile phone and various items. Various characters do return to Shattered Memories and have been re-imagined to fit with the style of the game and also the players actions throughout.
Climax Studios who developed Shattered Memories created the game so that it creates a psychological profile of the player as they progress through the game. Each action the player takes is 'logged' by the game and determines how each character Harry meets is seen. The video below was uploaded by Climax Studios and explains the psychological profiling of the game in more detail.
Climax Studios also revealed that the original name for Shattered Memories was actually Silent Hill Cold Heart. They announced this via a give-away of original pitch documents.
